About Monolith

Excellence meets craftsmanship

Established in 2016, Monolith Drywall has built a reputation for clean workmanship and honest service across the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

The company was founded by James Che, a formally trained drywall-finishing professional, and it still runs on his systematic approach: protect the space, prep properly, and do not call it finished until the light test says it is. No project is too intricate or too expansive.

We prioritize what you are actually trying to achieve, offering tailored solutions without ever compromising quality or precision. Our job is simple: deliver clean, structurally sound walls that are completely ready for paint.

No reviews on our site yet, and we are not going to invent any. We are asking every client from here on for an honest public review. Until then, judge us on what you can verify: our insurance certificate, our WSIB clearance, references from recent jobs, and a free on-site estimate that costs you nothing. Ask and we will send all four.

Questions

The things people ask before they call

Straight answers on cost, dust, asbestos and finish levels.

How much does drywall work cost?
Price depends on square footage, ceiling height, the finish level you need and how much prep or repair the space requires. Popcorn ceiling removal starts at $4 per square foot. Everything else is quoted after we see the space, so the number you get is the number you pay. Estimates are free.
Could my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
Possibly, if it went up before the mid-1980s. Textured coatings from that era can contain asbestos and it cannot be identified by eye. We arrange sampling and lab testing before any removal starts on an older ceiling. If it comes back positive we refer you to a licensed abatement contractor, then pick the job back up once the space is cleared. We will never scrape an untested vintage ceiling.
How much dust will this make, and who cleans up?
Sanding and ceiling removal are dusty by nature, so we plan for it: poly containment over doorways, floor and fixture protection, and vacuum-assisted sanding where the job suits it. Cleanup is included in the quote. We leave the space swept and paint-ready, not full of debris.
Are you insured and WSIB covered?
Yes to both. We carry liability insurance and are registered with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and we will send a certificate of insurance and a WSIB clearance certificate on request. That is usually what property managers and general contractors need before work starts.
What is a Level 4 or Level 5 finish?
They are the industry grades for how smooth a taped wall is. Level 4 is the normal finish for most homes and looks great under flat or matte paint. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat across the entire surface, which is what you want for gloss paint, dark colours or walls that catch strong side light. Those conditions show every imperfection. We will tell you which one your project actually needs rather than upselling by default.
How long will my project take?
Taping and finishing is a multi-day process because compound has to dry between coats. A single room is usually 3–5 days end to end; a basement is typically 1–2 weeks; a popcorn ceiling in one room can often be done in a couple of days. You get a realistic schedule in your written quote, not an optimistic one.
Do you paint as well?
We hand the surface over primer-ready and smooth, and we work alongside painters on most projects. If you do not have a painter lined up, say so and we will point you to trades we work with regularly.
Do I need to move out while you work?
Usually not. We seal off the work area so the rest of the home stays liveable, and we can sequence the job room by room. For whole-home ceiling removal it is more comfortable to be elsewhere for the scraping days, and we will tell you honestly which situation yours is.
What areas do you cover?
Waterloo Region and beyond: Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Elmira, St. Jacobs, Baden, New Hamburg and the surrounding townships, plus Guelph. Bigger projects further afield are worth a conversation.
How soon will I hear back?
A person reads every request and replies as soon as they can. We are a working trade, on site most of the day, so if your project is time sensitive please call (226) 339-8821. That is always the fastest route.
